A new season begins at BIAS: summer round-up & what’s ahead

As summer comes to an end, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past few months of incredible memories and look forward to the exciting months ahead!

One of the highlights of our summer was our annual BIAS trip to Eastbourne. The weather may not have been perfect, but that didn’t stop us from singing, dancing and enjoying a full day of laughter and friendship! It was a wonderful reminder of how much joy comes from being together as a community.

As September arrives, we’re kicking off the season with the return and continuation of our well-loved community projects – plus the launch of something new!

Ongoing Projects

Active Ageing Clubs

Our weekly clubs are starting back in Brent and Haringey in the first week of September, with music, bingo and of course, some dancing! They’re a wonderful way for older members of our community to connect, relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Befriending Projects

Our befriending projects will continue to bring connection and support to older members of our community:

  • Be-A-Friend: volunteers visit older people who may be living on their own, sharing conversation, companionship and friendship.
  • Telephone Befriending: regular calls from volunteers provide comfort, connection and a friendly chat to brighten someone’s day.

Exciting new project – Scéalta

This autumn, we’re proud to launch Scéalta, ‘Our Stories’ – our new oral history project.

Over the years, the Irish community has played a vital role in shaping Brent – in workplaces, schools, hospitals, churches and beyond – yet many of these stories have never been fully told.

Scéalta is about capturing those memories. We’ll be speaking with members of the Irish community, particularly those who moved to Brent in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, to hear about their journeys, experiences and contributions. The interviews are relaxed and informal, and the stories shared may later be featured in events or exhibitions celebrating the Irish community’s rich legacy in Brent.

This project is a chance to reflect, remember, and ensure that the voices and experiences of the community are celebrated for generations to come.
