Mary’s story

A club member of our Active Ageing Club, in her early 60’s had a heart attack after the sudden death of her husband. She felt isolated and stressed and concerned with her health and didn’t want to impose herself on her children’s lives. She had heard about our active ageing club Thursday Club through her friend who said it was a positive thing to do.

Through attending the club, she was able to be social and reconnect with people she hadn’t seen in quite some time, as well as make new friends. This was her only opportunity to socialise. She still gets bouts of isolation and fear but being in a warm, friendly and active environment, lessens these feelings and alleviates her anxiety. Her children have also seen a real difference in Sinead’s outlook on life and behaviour since the death of her husband.

The Active Ageing Thursday club tea dance has also helped her to keep active and mobile after her heart attack.

“For all who live alone, joining Thursday afternoons is the best thing for me, good company and a chance to exercise on a weekly basis, thank you all”
